My old arms can not take the remington 870 kick any more.  Which of the modern semi-autos shooting 3 1/2 inch shells has the least amount of recoil and muzzle lift?  Browning told me their maxus had the least but it sure shouldered differently than the A5,  the super black eagle, or the Beretta 400.  Also the bolt on the maxus is very hard to pull back compared to the other shotguns.

Well, if recoil is your main concern,  stay away from all benellis and the A5 as they rely on heavy recoil in order to operate. Remingtons Versa Max makes a big hoopla about their gun feeling like a 20 gauge...and it does.  If you have access to one, I'd highly recommend that you take it for a spin.

I second the VM.  I broke mine in by shooting a round of trap...with 3 1/2" #2s...and could still lift my arm afterwards.

These guys hav nailed it. Get a gas operated gun such as a Maxus, VersaMax or the A400. I shoot a A391 (Xtrema 2) and recoil is minimal. I used to use an SBE2, and the recoil was significantly harsher.

I went from an 870 Super Mag (3 1/2") to an 1187. They boost of the "super cell" recoil pad, and I laughed at it as I thought it was more gimmick than real. I was wrong....I don't even know if the 1187 kicks as much as a 20 gauge.

I agree with one poster that if you are trying to reduce recoil, stay away from the guns that use inertia mechanics to operate. The kick is a byproduct. I also have a Stoeger 3500, and even with a $40 liimbsaver pad (which is thicker and softer than the super cell), it still kicks harder than the 1187.

Hope that helps.
